In the eighth century the Spanish monk Beatus of Liébana wrote a manuscript titled Commentary on the Apocalypse in which he described the societal collapse occurring in Spain through the lens of the Book of Revelation. My photographs rework this idea towards documenting the United States in its own time of breakdown. Here I explore my obsessions with secrets, the streets, churches and rivers; myths, extremists; the flag, God and violence. This is an intimate, close up vision of a raw, new American history unfolding before us. Within these photos, made over the past nine years, the subdued, quiet moments of life on the southern plains weave together with events and geographies on the tips of the tongues of history; Portland, The Third Precinct, Insurrection. Beatus used his text to warn believers that they needed to prepare for the end, but I think we are only at the beginning.
