Year of the Cockroach is a hand bound book published in 2023. Whereas Commentary is an exploration of the world around me, Year of the Cockroach is self examination, a personal apocalypse. This work includes Polaroid, medium format, collage, 35mm and digital works made from my first days as a teenage photographer in 1999 until 2023.
Years of half conciousness, more than a decade of manual labor at a Texas cement plant and a long obsession with annihilation. Year of the Cockroach is about survival through no means of my own.
Apocalypse means destruction, but another definition describes a revelation, a revealing of the truth.
In this time I was awake for days on end and dreams began to take over my life. I dreamed I was in another time and place, but more than a dream I was living, right there, in that very moment, not two places at once, I had simply left the current world and moved backwards in time, I was another person inhabited by my own soul, but living different lives. I would come to back at my house, sweat and the smell of smoke. The devil came to my door and knocked three times.
